Australia PR for Indians: points, visas & the real process

An honest, up-to-date guide to permanent residency through skilled migration — what the points test actually requires, which visa fits you, and how the process works end to end. Written by a MARA registered team with offices in Sydney and Bangalore.

The short answer

To get Australia PR through skilled migration you need a positive skills assessment in an eligible occupation, competent-or-better English, and a points score that wins an invitation. The official minimum is 65 points across the subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas — but 65 only enters the pool. In 2025–2026 rounds, competitive scores have often been 80–95+, and a rise to a 70-point floor has been proposed for around July 2026. The practical goal is to maximise your points, not just clear 65.

1 What "Australia PR" really means

Skilled migration is a ranked competition, not a queue.

For most Indian professionals, "Australia PR" means permanent residency through the General Skilled Migration program, run by the Department of Home Affairs. You are not simply applying and waiting — you are competing. Candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), and the highest-ranked profiles in each occupation are invited to apply.

The three main skilled visas are the subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), the subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) and the subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional, a provisional visa that leads to PR). Each uses the same points test; what differs is sponsorship and where you can live.

2 How the points are calculated

The four core factors that decide most of your score.

Our points calculator estimates your core score from the four factors below — the ones that move the needle for almost every applicant.

FactorPointsHow it works
Ageup to 30Maximum 30 for ages 25–32; 25 for 18–24 or 33–39; 15 for 40–44; none at 45+
Englishup to 20Superior (IELTS 8+) scores 20; Proficient (IELTS 7) scores 10; Competent (IELTS 6) scores 0
Skilled work experienceup to 20Overseas (up to 15) and Australian (up to 20) experience, combined and capped at 20 total
Qualificationsup to 20Doctorate 20; bachelor or master degree 15; diploma or trade qualification 10

These four are the core points. Further points are available — state nomination, a skilled partner, Australian study, a professional year and a community language — and the right combination depends on your individual profile, which is what a MARA agent reviews.

3 How many points do you really need?

The number on the calculator is the start, not the finish.

The official minimum is 65 points to lodge an EOI for the 189, 190 or 491. But because invitations are ranked, in 2025–2026 rounds competitive 189 scores have often been 80–95+, and the government has proposed lifting the floor to 70 points from around July 2026.

The honest bit most agents skip: reaching 65 points lets you enter the pool — it does not mean you will be invited. If a calculator or an agent tells you "65 = you qualify," read that as "65 = you're allowed to enter," not "you're in."

4 Which visa fits you — 189 vs 190 vs 491

The right visa often depends on how far your score is from competitive.
VisaSponsorshipBoostBest for
189 Skilled IndependentNoneStrong scorers who want to live anywhere in Australia
190 Skilled NominatedState / territory+5Solid profiles a few points short of an independent invitation
491 Skilled Work RegionalState or eligible family+15Those open to a regional area, leading to PR via the 191

A common path: if your independent (189) score isn't competitive, the +5 from a 190 nomination or +15 from a 491 can be the difference between waiting indefinitely and getting invited. The trade-off with the 491 is a commitment to a designated regional area before you transition to permanent residency.

5 The process, step by step

From skills assessment to a granted visa.
  1. Check your occupationConfirm it sits on the relevant skilled occupation list for the visa you're targeting.
  2. Skills assessmentGet a positive assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation. This is often the longest single step.
  3. English testSit IELTS, PTE or an equivalent. Aim higher than the minimum — English is one of the easiest places to add points.
  4. Calculate your pointsTotal your score honestly, as it will stand at the time of invitation.
  5. Submit your EOILodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect; apply for state nomination too if you're going for the 190 or 491.
  6. Receive an invitationIf your ranked score is competitive in your occupation, you're invited to apply.
  7. Lodge the visaSubmit the full application with documents, plus health and character checks.

6 Frequently asked questions

The questions Indian applicants ask us most.
How many points do I need for Australia PR from India in 2026?

The official minimum is 65 points to submit an EOI for the 189, 190 or 491. But 65 only enters you into the pool — it doesn't guarantee an invitation. In 2025–2026 rounds, competitive 189 scores have often been 80–95+, and a 70-point floor has been proposed for around July 2026. Plan to score well above 65.

Which Australia PR visa is best for an Indian applicant?

It depends on your score and flexibility. The 189 needs no sponsorship but is the most competitive. The 190 adds 5 points via state nomination. The 491 adds 15 points but requires living and working in a regional area before transitioning to PR. If your independent score is short, the 190 or 491 are usually the realistic routes.

How are Australia PR points calculated?

The core points come from four factors: age (max 30, for ages 25–32), English (up to 20 for superior English), skilled work experience (overseas and Australian combined, capped at 20), and qualifications (up to 20 for a doctorate). Further points come from state nomination, a skilled partner, Australian study, a professional year and a community language. Our calculator gives an indicative core estimate; a MARA agent confirms the full picture.

Is 65 points enough for Australia PR?

65 makes you eligible to lodge an EOI, but it's rarely enough to be invited. Because invitations are ranked, most successful applicants score considerably higher. Treat 65 as the entry ticket to the pool, not a pass.

Do I need a registered migration agent?

You can apply yourself, but the points test, occupation lists and nomination rules are easy to misread — and a wrong claim at invitation can sink an application. A MARA registered agent helps you maximise points, choose the right visa, and avoid costly mistakes. Tachnat offers a free initial eligibility assessment.
