The Skills in Demand visa (Subclass 482) is Australia's primary employer-sponsored temporary work visa. It allows Australian employers to bring skilled overseas workers to Australia for roles that cannot be filled locally — and for many Indian professionals, it is the first step towards permanent residence.
What is the Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)?
Formerly known as the Temporary Skill Shortage visa, the 482 was significantly reformed in late 2024. It now operates across three salary-based streams — replacing the previous occupation list system — making it more flexible for both employers and applicants.
For medium-to-high earners, the 482 is also a stepping stone to the permanent Subclass 186 visa after working for the same Australian employer for a qualifying period.
