The Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is Australia's points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers — no employer, no state nomination required. If your occupation is in demand and your points are competitive, this is your clearest path to Australian permanent residence.
What is the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)?
The 189 is part of Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Applicants submit an Expression of Interest through the SkillSelect system and are invited to apply based on their points score. The higher your score, the sooner your invitation arrives.
Once granted, you can live and work anywhere in Australia, include your family, access Medicare, and work towards Australian citizenship — with no restrictions on state or employer.
